OSX server using port 80

When OSX Server is installed it will use port 80. It is pretty hard to get rid of the apache instance that server uses. If you need port 80 for something else (MAMP for example) you can free port 80 by disabling it in the “apache_serviceproxy.conf” file. To do so go to:

  • /Library/Server/Web/Config/Proxy
  • Edit the ‘apache_serviceproxy.conf’ file
  • put a ‘#’ in front of the line ‘listen 80’
  • And if you want to free 443, put a # in front of that line also.

Restart the machine. Now port 80 should be free for other use like MAMP.
